It was a sunny, cloudless day and I went to the forest park to hunt for spider webs. Spider webs are designed to be invisible to their prey, the insects, so unless the conditions are good, they cannot be seen by the human eyes. When the weather is clear, it is easier to find them because there is always sunlight.
The key points to find them are
- Look for the backlit side (the direction where the sun is shining)
- Look at the same place at different times of the day (the angle of the sun changes).
- When you find one, look for others around it.
- Find a place where you have found them before (they seem to have a habit of finding them in the same place).
That's about it. The spider silk doesn't glow all the time, but only when the sun hits it at a certain angle. To the eye, they glow like twinkling stars.
The strongest glow comes from the webs that are about 10 cm in diameter and made by spiders as small as a few millimeters in length. They are often found near the crotches of branches of shrubs. When the conditions are right, they really sparkle like jewels, and I am so fascinated by their brilliance that I am forced to take pictures of them. The truth is that I need to anticipate the movement of the flowers as they sway in the wind and frame them in relation to the vertigo in the background. I still have a lot of training to do.
By the way, I often get the question, "Is this blur caused by the wind, and does it create these horizontal streaks of light?" It's not blur, it's vertigo. The streaks appear in the areas that are out of focus. When the image is in focus, it becomes a single line (dot). In this picture, the upper right corner, where the light band is the thinnest, is in focus.
